Última Hora: Aina Bauzà closer to her dream of crossing the Atlantic solo

Two years ago, she set aside her Olympic dream for an even bigger challenge: crossing the Atlantic solo and becoming the first Mallorcan and Balearic female sailor to achieve it. At 28, Aina Bauzà is getting closer to the starting line in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, where the 2023 Mini Transat will begin on 24 September. The race will cross the ocean to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean, with a stop in La Palma in the Canary Islands. “We’re close, but we haven’t reached the dock yet,” jokes the sailor, who is displaying her prized boat at the Palma International Boat Show.

Aboard the Redó by Ànima Negra, Aina Bauzà of the Club de Vela Port d’Andratx plans to “do something special, exciting and inspiring… to fulfil a dream.” She will sail her 6.50-metre boat and also hopes to become the fifth Spanish woman in history to cross the Atlantic solo — more than 4,000 nautical miles — in an edition where women account for ten per cent of the fleet.
